Outcome Oriented Curriculum: Need Of The Hour

Rising adoption and introduction of new and upcoming technologies such as machine learning, AI, cloud storage, Big Data, and IoT are bringing major changes in the ways of working in several industries. There are growing innovations and upgrades in the working process across companies and organizations which requires a skilled workforce.

The traditional methods of education lack the development of skills and concepts among the students which makes them incapable of fulfilling several industry requirements, getting jobs, and being able to contribute to the industry. Development of the education system is a major way of the country’s overall economic growth.

The implementation of NEP 2020 has put a major emphasis on the adoption of outcome-based education in the institutes. The main aim of outcome based education is to promote context-based learning rather than content-based learning as per the traditional methods. To help the students gain the required skills for their growth and development in society, the institutes need to adopt an Outcome-Oriented Curriculum immediately.

What is Outcome Oriented Curriculum?

The outcome-oriented curriculum is a syllabus that is designed in such a way that it helps the students to work on the path of the desired outcome as defined by the institute. The curriculum plays a major role in evaluating students’ performance and making sure that the steps are customized for the students to reach the outcomes with ease.

Constant Evaluation of Students-

The outcome-based education involves constant evaluation of students. The exams are conducted frequently to understand if the students are making progress in the direction of their desired outcomes. Outcome-based education expects the students to work and learn all together at the same pace. Hence, it is important to see if the students are on the track. The teachers need to guide them on their mistakes and shortcomings.

Further, the constant evaluation also helps the students to focus on learning on a small portion of the syllabus rather than having the burden of completing the entire syllabus for a single exam. It improves students’ performance and makes them understand the methods of learning in the institutes.

Further, the institutes make sure that the student’s performance is in alignment with the required course outcomes and program outcomes defined by them. The teachers understand the method of teaching and guide the students throughout the course.

Developing Skills and Cognitive Abilities-

OBE is designed in such a way that it develops overall values and skills among the students which makes them ready for their professional lives in the future. The curriculum involves developing group learning, team building, and cognitive abilities among the students which will make it easy for them to work with people in the future. Further, it develops emotional understanding among the students making empathetic leaders in the future.

Other important skills such as professionalism, understanding perspectives, and soft skills are also a part of the desired outcomes expected from the course. In this way, the curriculum is designed such that the students get through all these skills over their course duration.

Creating Better Opportunities-

The outcome-based education makes the students ready for better opportunities in terms of jobs and research in the future. The students are expected to fulfill the desired outcomes which will make them skilled and knowledgeable for the opportunities. This also improves the institute’s reputation such that more companies and organizations will offer jobs to the students.

Clarity among Students-

In the traditional methods of education, the students used to be unclear about what is expected of them. They studied only for grades and marks. Scores were allotted to students based on their performance in the exams. The exams were conducted on the theoretical knowledge of the students. This encouraged the students to use memorization techniques and rot learning for the exams.

The students did not develop much knowledge or skills in this process. The introduction of outcome-based education brings clarity to the students. It helps them to focus only on what is expected of them. The desired outcomes are defined at the beginning of the course and the curriculum is designed in the same way.

The students learn in the expected way as they are constantly evaluated for their performance.

Learning Success-

OBE offers better learning outcomes as compared to the traditional education methods across several decades. The outcomes are predefined by the institute and students as well as teachers focus on working towards the same goal. However, handling large amounts of data and conducting evaluations constantly is a major issue for the institute. The system generates reports that help the teachers in helping the students with their studies.

Conclusion-

In this way, outcome-based education is a need of an hour in recent times. The use of learning management systems, student information software, and other ERP solutions can help the institutes to manage different learning approaches with ease and efficiency.
